Be Fruitful & Multiply

Pastor Tim Spirk

Genesis 1:28

From the very beginning, God’s intention for humanity was clear:

“Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it…”

This wasn’t just about physical growth—it was about influence, impact, and stewardship. To multiply means to increase—in number, in reach, in power, and in influence.

That same call still echoes today. But there’s an important truth we can’t miss:

We cannot multiply what we are not producing.

Jesus said in John 15:8 that when our lives bear abundant fruit, we demonstrate that we are His disciples and bring glory to the Father. Multiplication in God’s Kingdom always begins with fruit.

So the question becomes—how do we live lives that actually produce it?

Psalm 1 gives us a picture of what a fruitful life looks like:

“…They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.”

A life that produces fruit doesn’t happen by accident. It’s cultivated.

Healthy fruit starts with strong roots.

Colossians 2 reminds us to let our roots grow deep in Christ—to build our lives on Him so that our faith remains steady no matter what comes. A rooted life is not easily shaken. It is grounded, consistent, and anchored in truth.

But Scripture also gives a warning: be careful what you allow to feed your life.

There are “empty philosophies” and distractions that can pull us away from what truly nourishes us. What we take in matters. What we dwell on shapes what we become.

When we continually return to God’s Word—meditating on it, delighting in it—we develop a strong root system. And strong roots allow us to endure every season, even the difficult ones.

Jesus described this kind of life in Luke 8 as good soil—people who hear the Word, hold tightly to it, and patiently produce a harvest.

Roots need water.

In John 7, Jesus invites us to come and drink—and He promises that rivers of living water will flow from within us. He’s speaking of the Holy Spirit.

A fruitful life is not sustained by effort alone. It requires continual filling.

The Holy Spirit strengthens us, renews us, teaches us, and leads us. He becomes our source of life and sustenance. And as we learn to recognize His voice, we begin to live from a place of overflow instead of depletion.

This is not a one-time filling—it’s ongoing. Daily. Constant.

What surrounds you matters.

Psalm 1 begins by showing us what not to do—don’t walk in step with ungodly influence or settle into environments that pull you away from truth.

Why? Because influence shapes direction.

A simple principle applies: whatever you cultivate will grow.

What grows will produce fruit.
And what produces fruit will multiply.

The voices you listen to, the environments you stay in, and the relationships you nurture all play a role in what your life produces.

Fruitfulness is not the end goal—multiplication is.

God’s desire is not just that we grow, but that what He does in us begins to impact others. That our lives would carry His presence, reflect His character, and extend His Kingdom wherever we go.

But it all starts here:

Being rooted in Him.
Being filled by His Spirit.
Being intentional about what we cultivate.

Because when those things are in place, fruit is inevitable.

And when fruit is present—multiplication follows.
