The Joy of Serving

Pastor Tim Spirk

What if joy isn’t found in recognition or success—but in serving others? Scripture reminds us that true greatness comes not from being served, but from serving.

In Ephesians 4:15–16, Paul describes the church as a living body—each part fitted and held together by what every joint supplies. When every person contributes their part, something supernatural happens: the body grows stronger, healthier, and full of love. God’s power flows through ordinary people doing what He’s called them to do—together.

Jesus redefined greatness in Matthew 20:26, saying, “Whoever wants to be great among you must be your servant.” He didn’t just talk about service; He lived it. Moved by compassion, Jesus taught, healed, fed, and cared for the overlooked. He washed His disciples’ feet and ultimately laid down His life—the greatest act of service the world has ever known.

To become more like Jesus means becoming servant-hearted. Serving is not about status—it’s about love in action.

Paul described believers in 1 Corinthians 16 who “spent their lives in service to God’s people.” Their service brought encouragement and refreshment to others—and joy to their own hearts.

Serving:

  • Strengthens your faith and brings spiritual growth.

  • Builds relationships and community.

  • Helps others encounter Jesus through you.

  • Honors and blesses people outside of yourself.

  • Opens the door for God to trust you with more.

When you serve, you bring the presence of Jesus into every task—whether greeting at the door, teaching kids, or quietly helping behind the scenes.

Jesus said, “The harvest is great, but the workers are few” (Matthew 9:37). The invitation is simple—step into the field. God doesn’t require perfection, just a willing heart.

At Christ Community Church, serving isn’t just filling a need—it’s answering a call. Every act of service builds something eternal and brings joy that only comes from walking in His purpose.
