Deeply Rooted: Standing Firm in Truth
Pastor Tim Spirk
In a world filled with shifting values, conflicting voices, and half-truths, followers of Jesus are called to something deeper. We are called to live deeply rooted in Him—grounded in truth, built on His foundation, and guided by His Spirit.
Jesus said in John 8:32, “You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Truth is not just information in our heads; it’s revelation that transforms our hearts. Without it, we won’t recognize deception when it comes.
Rooted and Built Up in Christ
Paul wrote in Colossians 2:6–7:
“Just as you accepted Christ Jesus as your Lord, you must continue to follow him. Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”
Roots go deep. They anchor us when storms come. A life built on Christ is not static—it is continually growing upward on a strong foundation. Paul warns us not to be “captured” by hollow philosophies or human reasoning. To be captured is to be taken as spoils of war. If we are not firmly planted, we can be carried off by deceptive thinking.
When we are rooted in Jesus, Paul says in Ephesians 4:14–15, we will not be “tossed and blown about by every wind of new teaching.” Instead, we grow strong, speaking the truth in love and becoming more like Christ.
Three Ways to Stay Rooted
1. Get Healed
Unhealed wounds in our lives can become breeding grounds for deception. Painful places often crave comfort, and if left unchecked, they can latch onto lies that sound good to our ears but lead us astray.
Proverbs 4:23 reminds us: “Guard your heart above all else, for it determines the course of your life.” And Psalm 147:3 declares: “He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.”
Allowing Jesus to heal the broken places in us keeps our hearts soft and receptive to His truth.
2. Study the Word
Paul urged Timothy to handle the Word carefully: “Work hard so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval… correctly explain the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15).
God told Joshua to meditate on His Word daily—not just to read it, but to mutter it, repeat it, and let it saturate his thoughts. The Word must become more than information; it should be conversation in our daily lives, shaping how we see and respond to the world.
3. Be Filled with the Holy Spirit
Jesus promised in John 14:26 that the Holy Spirit would teach us and remind us of everything He said. The Spirit doesn’t just inform us; He transforms us and gives us discernment.
Discerning of spirits is the supernatural ability to distinguish the source of what we are hearing—whether from God, man, or the enemy. In an age of overwhelming voices, we desperately need His discernment.
We grow in discernment by:
Asking God for wisdom and understanding.
Practicing discernment in everyday situations.
Submitting what we sense to mature believers for confirmation.
As Paul wrote in 1 Corinthians 2:12, “We have received God’s Spirit, not the world’s spirit, so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.”
To be deeply rooted is to live healed, grounded in the Word, and filled with the Spirit. This is how we stand firm against deception, grow in maturity, and live lives that overflow with thankfulness.
When our roots go deep in Jesus, our lives become unshakable, and our faith becomes unmovable.
Let’s go deep. Let’s stay rooted. Let’s build on Him alone.
